About Us

About Us Picture

The St Cuthbert's Centre was developed in the 1990s and is a Mission Project of the United Reformed Church. The Northern Synod of the URC takes responsibility for its management, life and ministry. Finding inspiration in the pastoral and missionary gifts of St Cuthbert we offer groups and churches a modern, well equipped building, adaptable for a range of activities.

Visitors will find a light, attractive and comfortable multipurpose hall, seating up to 45 people. The space is easily convertible from a sanctuary into a workshop area or somewhere to eat together.

Our spacious gallery is particularly suitable for small group work and The Old Boiler House Chapel, a place with a very special atmosphere, is suitable for individual reflection, meditation and prayer.

The Centre is surrounded by pleasant gardens which, like the Centre itself, are accessible to wheel chair users. Sculpures by Jean Parker are another attractive garden feature.

For a small fee, churches and groups can book the Centre for their own ‘Away Day’ or Quiet Day. Our Director will be happy to help you plan your day and to participate. He will also be happy to let you ‘do your own thing’.

It is possible to use the Centre for longer periods whilst staying in one of the Island’s hotels, bed and breakfasts or self-catering cottages. Further information is available from our Director or from the Holy Island web site.

St Cuthbert’s Ministry:

‘The Prayer Board’
A prime ministry of St Cuthbert’s Centre. We will pray for people who leave their requests on the board.

‘Sunday Worship Slot’
Book your church in for your own worship time at 4.00pm.
This is free of charge with tea and coffee are included.

‘The Bothy’
Suitable for one person. People stay here for a variety of reasons but essentially so that they can be alone with themselves and with God. In exchange for free accommodation Bothy Residents ‘steward’ the Centre for five hours a day, providing an opportunity for Christian service to the many visitors who call in to browse, to pick up our leaflets, and to look at the various displays we maintain. The steward Scheme runs from Easter to the end of October only.

Alternatively, those who wish to do so can make a Private Retreat without stewarding the Centre. A fee of £20 for the first night and £17.50p per night thereafter is payable for self-catering Bothy accommodation. .
